When is this year’s Call of Duty being announced?

It’s Call of Duty time – or at least it should be fairly soon if previous games are anything to go by. If Activision sticks to tradition we could see the new Call of Duty announced at some point over the next couple of weeks, with recent games in the series having typically been revealed on May 1.

Last year’s game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, was announced even earlier, with the name confirmed on April 9 ahead of its full reveal on April 26. That’s one year ago tomorrow, if you’re counting.

And that’s ignoring the series of leaks that typically build up to it, of course. Call of Duty: Ghosts box art was leaked by Tesco on April 24, 2013, one week before its official announcement on May 1, while Black Ops 2 was leaked by retailers multiple times in the months ahead of announcement.

A pair of reports linked to this year’s Call of Duty, meanwhile, claim that the game could be set in space in the “very far future”. Ghosts studio Infinity Ward is also confirmed to be developing, although it’ll be the first game built by the studio following its merge with Neversoft. The studio has previously said that this year is “going to be incredible”, with gameplay due to be shown at E3 in June. That doesn’t mean, of course, that it won’t be announced before then.

Activision’s next investor relations call is due for next Thursday, May 5, too, so it’s likely we may have heard something before then And if we haven’t, you should almost certainly expect analysts to ask for some details during the call.
