inXile boss Brian Fargo has launched the Kickstarter appeal for Wasteland 2, raising $549,747 so far.
Fargo says that this is probably his last roll of the dice in terms of trying to fund a Wasteland sequel, despite the recent success of the Fallout series. Fallouts 1 and 2 were spiritual successors to Wasteland, and were produced while Fargo was in charge of Interplay.
“This is probably the last chance for a Wasteland sequel. We have tried to pitch this game multiple times to game publishers, but they’ve balked. They don’t think there’s any interest in a solid, old school type of game.”
“This is our shot at proving them wrong. And more importantly this could help bring back an entire genre of RPGs. The power of the Indie scene continues and we see this as all part of a bigger trend of bringing control back to the developers.”
The project has a set target of $900,000. The game will actually require $1m, but Fargo has pledged to put in the last $100,000 himself if need be.
It seems inXile’s efforts are off to a good start, and it now has 34 days to find the remaining $350,000.
Double Fine’s adventure game Kickstarter closed yesterday with a whopping total of $3,335,265 – more than eight times the original target of $400,000.
