Brian Fargo’s Wasteland 2 has reached its $900,000 Kickstarter goal, roughly 48 hours after the funding drive launched.
Fargo previously said that inXile will need $1m to make the game, but added that he’d stump up the last $100,000 out of his own pocket if necessary. After pitching the project to numerous publishers with no success, Fargo believes this is the last chance to make Wasteland 2 work.
Thanks to the efforts of more than 16,000 backers, it looks like the game will finally get made. There are 33 days left for raising additional funds, too: Fargo says that OSX support and an expanded game world are the top priorities if donations surpass $1.25m.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that the Double Fine’s Kickstarter success might have might been a flash in the proverbial pan. Few people expected Fargo’s appeal to achieve similar levels of funding, but it now looks almost certain that the project will gather at least $1m – probably a fair bit more than that, provided funding doesn’t tail off entirely.
So, that’s two important games that have been successfully crowdsourced – games that would never have received backing from publishers. The question now is, will we see a third? And if so, is this a funding model that’s going to stick around?
