Relic Entertainment’s Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is coming back to modern gamers with the release of its upcoming Definitive Edition, but hardcore fans are already upset.
Releasing on August 14, 2024, the remastered RTS comes with the original Dawn of War and all its expansions, along with enhanced visuals, an improved camera, and 64-bit platform support. Unfortunately, some minor changes have annoyed fans of the original release.
Dawn of War changes Space Marine scream
As reported by IGN, the new high-quality version of Dawn of War’s iconic intro movie was released to announce the game’s upcoming release date. While the new version of the intro movie looks fantastic, a number of audio changes have been made including the removal of the iconic “Space Marine scream” that became a huge meme.
Dawn of War fans immediately picked up on the replaced scream which adds in Gabriel Angelos’ in-game battlecry instead of the gutteral, hateful scream of the intro’s completely different Space Marine. Of course, many players responded with the usual “THEY RUINED IT” with one fan saying: “Leaving the sergeant’s scream out is a crime against humanity, and therefore heresy.”
Relic Entertainment has immediately responded to the cries of the fandom in a statement to IGN. While the studio claimed that the scream was removed due to its considerably lower audio quality than other restored files, it seems that the older scream may be added back to the game.
“We decided to change the scream as the original audio was quite distorted which was notable when compared to some of the audio touch ups in the enhanced trailer,” the developer explained. “That said, we’ve heard the feedback from fans — the roar was even more beloved than we realized! Who knows, we may have something for OG roar enjoyers before long.”
The original scream from the old version of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War wasn’t only iconic for its placement in the game. In fact, that scream spread across the internet for years back in the early 2000s and 2010s. It was in YouTube videos, it was in shoddy soundboard apps alongside “PINGAS” and other meme sounds.
Following the shoddy remaster of SEGA’s Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, Dawn of War Definitive Edition does look like a great remaster, but time will tell if its actually good. I wonder if someone will port the Ultimate Apocalypse Mod to the new game? Now that would be great.
