A PlayStation 4 port of free-to-play WWII dogfighter War Thunder will launch alongside the console this Christmas, Gaijin Entertainment has announced.

The PS4 version will take advantage of the “potent power” of Sony’s next-gen console, Gaijin states, and feature “powerful graphics”, “intelligent personalization”, “deeply integrated social capabilities”, and “innovative cloud options”.

Gaijin has also integrated an improved head-tracking system into the console port – presumably controlled via the PlayStation 4’s camera – and will take advantage of the console’s video capture and streaming functionality.

But what exactly is War Thunder? Well, judging by the game’s official site, the game appears to be a WWII flight combat game that sees players engage in air battles over land and sea.

Gaijin has previously developed current-gen flight sim IL-2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey and Apache: Air Assault.

“We’re convinced that our cooperation with Sony will not only make the War Thunder franchise better, but it will give our fans a new level of gaming experience that will figuratively blown their mind,” said creative director Kirill Yudintsev.

“Partnering with Sony Computer Entertainment is the most natural progression for the War Thunder brand, from our hugely successful beginnings on PC with more than 1.5 million players, to our recent announcement that War Thunder is under development for mobile devices. We are excited to bring War Thunder to the leading next-generation platform, the PS4.”
