The Wall Street Journal reports that, according to “people familiar with the matter”, Microsoft is developing a new motion tracking video camera for its Xbox 360 console.

Although immediately comparable to the Wii’s motion sensing abilities, Microsoft’s solution is said to require only the camera, with the user not required to hold any additional hardware. The camera would sit near the television and capture the movement of the player’s hands, legs or head.

And when does the Wall Street Journal anticipate the new 3D motion camera to be unveiled? Potentially as early as E3 next month, although people close to the matter don’t expect the device will hit stores until 2010. It’s also thought that the camera will initially be made available as an accessory, but could end up being sold as part of a bundle with the Xbox 360 console.

Microsoft has declined to comment.
