Saints Row developer Volition would consider making an MMO version of its open world gangster action game, if rivals like Rockstar make moves in that direction.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at a recent hands-on press event in London, associate producer Dan Sutton said that if the open world genre “goes that way” the Saints Row developer “might go that way as well”.

He also gave the strongest indication yet that the team is planning a third Saints Row game, saying it may not be until Saints Row 3 comes out that PS3 Home integration is included in the series.

Saints Row 2, due out for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC this October, includes a two-player drop in and out co-op campaign. When asked whether the feature was the first step towards a Saints Row MMO, Sutton replied: “We have to think about that. I think we want to continue on with the type of game we have now, but an MMO, it’s a different type of game. I don’t know if we’d detract people or embrace people. We have to put some research out there and see.

“I think we want to keep continuing to do offerings like this as well, where you have self contained stuff, but if there’s a market for that, you know. It seems as though GTA has discussed that. There’s that APB game that’s going to be an MMO. If the genre goes that way, we might go that way as well. It depends on where stuff goes.”

Fans can also start getting excited about the prospect of a third Saints Row game, after Sutton told us it might not be until SR3 that PS3 owners see Home integration.

Speaking on Home, he said: “I think it’s cool. It’s a cool system to do, getting your avatar in there, going round and visiting certain games. Maybe getting exclusive features if you go into the Saints Row room, wherever it’s located in the Home world. Overall I think it’s cool to integrate some of those features in there. Once we see what the final product is we can start developing towards that, whether it’s in Saints Row 2 or Saints Row 3.”
