The film, scheduled for release this winter, is based on the first of the Inheritance fantasy novels penned by Christopher Paolini. As in the book and film, the game will follow a teenager who, whilst out playing, discovers what he thinks is a rock. This rocks turns out to be an egg, which hatches and leaves behind a magical blue dragon. The boy bonds with the dragon and becomes the last of the Dragon Riders.

The home console version is in development at Stormfront Studios (Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers) and will appear on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360 and PC. The game is said to feature melee and magic-based combat, finishing moves, airborne dragon combat, and two-player co-op play.

Handheld games are also in the works at Amaze Entertainment (The Lord of the Rings: Tactics for the PSP, The Chronicles of Narnia on the GBA). The DS game will be an action based RPG, and players will be able to cast spells using the touch screen. The GBA version will also be an RPG, but this time using a turn-based approach. The PSP version, titled Eragon and Saphira, is to be completely different to the other versions of the game, focusing much more on airborne combat, with the single-player campaign told from the perspective of the dragon. A multiplayer mode for up to four players will also be included.

The games are scheduled for release in November, hitting retail a few weeks prior to the film’s release on December 12.
