It seems your prayers have been answered: Sega have today announced that their classic tennis game is coming to the PSP. And you thought it was only good for racing games…

For the update, Sega have once again turned to Sumo Digital to handle the conversion; the team who worked on the fantastic version of Outrun 2 for the Xbox. They plan to deliver the same beautifully simple structure that the original gave us and pack in maybe one or two surprises as well.

The good news is that little has been sacrificed in the move to the PSP, as the game will offer three major modes. Exhibition, Tournament and World Tour should be more than enough to satisfy all you Virtua tennis fans. In particular, World Tour will allow you to create and build a character, helping him or her progress through the tour with training mini-games, and looks to be a lot of fun. Adding to that is the promise of 4 player wireless gaming, creating an experience that will be as refreshing as it is faithful to the original. All in all it looks like a promising and well-rounded package.

Virtua Tennis on PSP successfully combines the legendary gameplay of the Virtua Tennis range with great new features designed for the gamer on the go,” commented Matt Woodley, Creative Director of SEGA. “Add to that a roster of licensed players and the game looking gorgeous on the PSP’s amazing screen and you’ve got what I believe is a must-have title.”

At the minute a release date is still up in the air, but Sega plan to have the game in shops by autumn, and hopefully it’ll be a release title for the European PSP launch. Either way, we’ll be sure to give you a more in depth report once we take a look at it during E3.
