In an interview with US magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly, Kataoka has said that tests carried out specifically to evaluate online play proved to be unsatisfactory. Simulating lag and timing problems that would become an issue should the game be online left the team far from impressed. “It wound up feeling like a completely different game,” said Kataoka.
There is some hope though. Kataoka added that if they “ever wanted to do an online fighting game, it would have to be called something besides Virtua Fighter.” For now, Virtua Fighter fans will have to make do with beating up their mates while sitting next to them on the sofa.
