303 surgeons participated in a medical training course conducted by Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, which saw the medical professionals take part in gaming sessions and perform laparoscopic surgical procedures. For those not up on the medical lingo, a laparoscopic procedure requires the use of a tiny video camera and long, thin instruments which are inserted through small incisions.
According to CNN, the surgeons warmed up by playing games such as Super Monkey Ball for 20 minutes directly before entering surgery. The study found that not only were those surgeons that played the video games faster by around 11 seconds, but also made fewer errors than those who went into surgery without playing a video game.
The results support those from a study in 2003 which suggested that playing video games improved eye-hand coordination, reaction time and visual skills. Kids, if you’re reading this news, you now have plenty of ammunition to convince your parents that you need an Xbox 360; not for fun, but because you need one to be a good surgeon when you get older.
