Hardware: Rivals, a reboot of the popular PS2 car-fighter, will be released exclusively on PS4, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced.

Developed by a new first-party studio, SCE Connected Content Group, Rivals is entirely vehicle-based and focused on multiplayer inter-car combat. You can also pick heavy-duty tanks or more nimble fast-attack cars for different strategies.

The original, called Hardware: Online Arena, was a PS2 exclusive released in 2002, and was one of the first PS2 games to include online multiplayer. Having skipped a generation, the series is now getting rebooted on PS4, digital only, with a beta coming “in the near future.”

“We’ve taken the opportunity to introduce a truckload of upgrades and new features, but the spirit of the original gameplay remains the same,” said Connected Group’s Dan Durnin. “Bringing back the explosive mayhem and online rivalry of vehicle combat has been an absolute pleasure and we can’t wait for you to get behind the wheel.”
