Valve is keeping its promise to bring forward the release of its Dead Air DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, following a successful test of its Cold Stream campaign.

Dead Air, a fan favourite scenario from Left 4 Dead 1, has been tweaked and ported over to Left 4 Dead 2 as a part of the forthcoming Cold Stream DLC – an expansion which also includes a new campaign, also called Cold Stream.

Valve previously said it would release Dead Air early if 20,000 people earned the Stream Crosser achievement, as part of plans to test the new scenario. To gain the achievement, players simply needed to survive a Cold Stream campaign on any difficulty.

As reported on Valve’s blog, the community hit their target in just four-and-a-half hours. And that means that Dead Air will now be out sooner than planned – although just how much sooner isn’t clear, as Valve explained.

“Since you hit your mark, this means we are going to unlock Dead Air early,” read the announcement. “We are going to try and release it as early as possible but will release it on July 22 the latest. It isn’t currently ready for release as we have been working on The Terminal and Finale maps and need to test them more internally.”

Cold Stream itself was created by modder Matthew Lourdelet. The new DLC pack is being handled by Valve as a collaboration between themselves and the Left 4 Dead community.
