Stephen Merchant was a natural fit to voice the part of Wheatley, a Personality Core who will play a major role in imminent sequel Portal 2, Valve’s Chet Faliszek has told DigitalSpy.
“Really it was more about that they were the voices in our heads for the characters,” said Faliszek. “Stephen Merchant in particular, we just had that voice in our head, and his pacing has a distinct way of speaking [and] a way of making us laugh.”
He added: “So we were happy to get him, totally surprised we could, and he was a natural fit. It was great working with an actual comedic actor himself, because he knows timing, he knows how to tell a joke and knows about pacing, and that’s really important.”
You’ll be able to see just how natural a fit Merchant is when Portal 2 launches on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 on April 21.
