Valve will release its own Steam Box running on Linux, co-founder and managing director Gabe Newell has told The Verge.

“We’ll come out with our own and we’ll sell it to consumers by ourselves,” Newell said. “That’ll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We’re not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination.”

The confirmation follows the announcement of the Xi3 Piston, a third-party tiny form factor box designed to make use of Steam Big Picture Mode.

Newell says that Valve’s goal for its Steam Box is to “build a thing that’s quiet and focuses on high performance … and appropriate form factors.”
