PS4 continues to show rivals that it’s the console to beat in the next-gen race, outpacing January sales of Xbox One by almost 2:1, Sony has said.
“The response has been fantastic. In the US, PS4 was #1 in sales for next-gen consoles in January, nearly doubling the nearest next-gen competitor,” wrote Sony Computer Entertainment America marketing vice president John Koller. “And PS4 remains the cumulative leader here based on today’s report from the NPD Group.”
He added: “Globally, we announced last month that we’ve sold through more than 4.2 million units as of the holiday season, making PS4’s launch the biggest in console gaming history. I think the PS4 demand is indicative of how we’ve tapped into something special – and that’s that gamers want to be recognized for their greatness and want to enjoy experiences together.”
“Since we launched on November 15th, we’ve sold every PS4 available in the US,” Koller concluded.
Microsoft is attempting to keep a brave face, highlighting the success of its Xbox platform as a whole.
“We are incredibly humbled and proud to see Xbox One continue to be the best launch of an Xbox in our history,” wrote Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of marketing, strategy and business, Xbox.
“Comparatively, Xbox One consoles have sold at a rate of 2.29 times faster than Xbox 360 in the US in the same timeframe for the first three months on the market. From our blazing start out of the gate, we have continued to see Xbox One delight fans in 13 markets around the world, with many more markets to come this year.”
Mehdi added: “Fans continue to show their excitement for new generation Xbox One games, with US consumers purchasing an average of 2.7 games per console since launch.”
He then pointed towards the launch of Titanfall in March, stating: “For people who haven’t purchased Xbox One, we believe Titanfall will be the energizer to launch a new generation of gameplay.”
Call of Duty: Ghosts was the best-selling game in January, followed by NBA 2K14, Battlefield 4, Assassin’s Creed 4, and GTA 5. Tomb Raider, which includes the new PS4 and Xbox One versions, charted at No.10 with the PS4 version doubling units of Xbox One’s.
