A first preview of Uncharted 3 has been published on Entertainment Weekly, confirming the game’s title as Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

The theme of deception is said to play out in multiple ways throughout the game: Drake will do the deceiving, he’ll be deceived and there’s some mysterious deception about his identity.

The story will focus on Drake’s relationship with his mentor and friend, Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan, and has him searching for a legendary lost city that will take him to the Arabian Peninsula and the wasteland of the Rub’ al Khali Desert.

The game draws inspiration from the life of Sir Francis Drake and that of T.E. Lawrence’s early years as an archaeologist.

“When we first came up with the idea of sand, you see everyone’s eyes light up here and go, ‘Yeah, that’s going to be really hard – let’s do it!'” said Naughty Dog’s creative director Ann Hennig.

“We’re a bunch of nerds. We just look for something that will be a technical, artistic challenge, and allowed us to push into an area of the world and history we’ve never tapped into before,” added Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells.

The third game in the multi-million selling franchise will also make more expansive use of motion capture, that hopes to enhance the quality of the character performance.

We’re also promised several gameplay innovations, including enhanced backward climbing and the ability to fight multiple baddies at one.

Naughty Dog has also spent much of its time expanding the multiplayer and cooperative game modes, more info on which will be revealed in the coming months.

“We want to take on the big boys of the multi-player genre,” said Wells. “It has become something here at Naughty Dog that will become an important part to all our games.”

Expect much more on the title soon, along with a first look trailer at the Spike Video Game Awards this weekend.

If released next year, Uncharted is set to be the PS3’s biggest title of 2011. We reckon an October 2011 release is likely, pitting it against the likes of Gears of War 3 and the next title in the Call of Duty franchise.

With the second game having accumulated over 3.8 million sales, it’s set to be quite the fight.
