After a rip-roaring start, the UMD movie has been in somewhat of a freefall. Poor sales have lead many of the major studios to cut down their support for the format – a move mirrored by several retailers who have vastly reduced the format’s shelf space.
Speaking to United Press International, Dille has remained upbeat over the format’s future, and thinks that only now have the movie studios realised they need to focus on releasing titles which are strongly tailored to the PSP demographic.
“SCEA has been providing the Hollywood studios with data on the PSP consumer, both from a demographic and psychographic point of view, in an effort for them to better tailor their product offering to this new and emerging market,” said Dille. “As such, we have seen studios cutting back on releasing their full content on UMD, as unlike the DVD market, the PSP consumer is targeted. We are committed to helping the studios better understand our product and our consumer and will continue to educate them as we evolve and enhance the functionality of the PSP.“
Sony will be hoping that a similar situation doesn’t occur with the Blu-Ray movie format. The war between HD DVD and Blu-Ray is heating up, and with one (if not both) destined to be a failure, Sony are banking on the drive’s inclusion in the PlayStation 3 to propel the format into a leading position.
