As the summer drought finally passes over the videogames industry things have all of a sudden gone haywire in the UK videogame charts. This week saw the release of Sony’s long awaited PSP and the handheld has made a huge impact on the charts.
With hardware sales of 185,000 units the PSP has broken the previous UK sales record and software sales have been no slouch either, with the top 20 now dominated by PSP software. Brian Lara has finally been knocked off the top spot, but continues to sell well managing a very impressive No.2 despite all the PSP competition. We all expected a PSP game to top the chart this week, with the only question being which game would take the spoils. The honour has gone to Ridge Racer, beating off fellow racers Wipeout Pure (No.3), Need for Speed Underground: Rivals (No.6), Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition (No.7) and TOCA Race Driver 2 (No.8).
Slotting in amongst the PSP racers are Virtua Tennis: World Tour (No.4) and Metal Gear Acid (No.5). Non-PSP new entries this week were Delta Force: Black Hawk Down (No.15), Dungeon Siege II (No.30) and Moto GP: Ultimate Racing Technology 3 (No.38). I would have expected more from Moto GP 3 and expect it to climb the charts next week.
Next week expect new entries by The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for PS2, Xbox and Game Cube, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six 4: LockDown on PS2, Xbox and Game Cube, and Coded Arms on PSP.
