Prototype 2 has entered the All Formats All Prices UK video games chart at No.1, with its first week total higher than previous No.1 titles The Witcher 2 and Kinect Star Wars. Sales didn’t reach the heights of FIFA Street.

Sales for the game were split 63 per cent on Xbox 360 and 37 per cent on PS3.

However, comparisons to other games released this year paint a misleading picture, with Chart Track stating that the sequel didn’t quite match the first week total of the original game.

FIFA Street and FIFA 12 are non-movers at No.2 and No.3 respectively, Mass Effect 3 is at No.4 and Kinect Star Wars drops to No.5.

Other than Prototype 2 there are no new releases that make the Top 40 this week.

Whilst entering the chart at No.1 is important, Activision will be more concerned with sales figures, and Prototype 2’s failure to meet the first week tally of the first game, even when it launched on Tuesday, has got to be bad news.

Analysts predicted disappointing sales for the sequel, but Activision was bullish about its chances, hoping for sales in the region of double that of the first game.

Back in March Radical Entertainment studio VP Dave Fracchia said: “We sold 2.1 million copies of the first game and our expectations are much higher for this one.

“I would roughly say we’re looking at between 1.5 to two times [the sales of prototype]. I would obviously like to see it higher than that.”
