King Kong made a gallant effort to claim the Christmas number one with a massive 64% rise in sales over last week, which saw it leap from No.4 to No.2 in the chart, but even this gargantuan effort wasn’t enough to displace EA’s sales juggernaut. Need for Speed: Most Wanted hung on to the top spot and is this year’s Christmas No.1.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One has benefited from strong retailer promotion giving it third in the chart. Making up the rest of the top five are FIFA 06 at No.4 and Harry Potter at No.5. Retailer promotions also gave True Crime: New York City a hefty boost, doubling its sales and rising to No.9 in the chart. There were no new releases entering the chart this week, but Ubisoft’s budget title, Crazy Frog Racer, has managed to enter the top 40 on its second week of release, managing No.20 in the all format, all price chart.

For individual platforms Call of Duty 2: Big Red One tops the Xbox chart, with its graphically superior brother, Call of Duty 2, topping both the PC and Xbox 360 charts. Elsewhere, Need for Speed: Most Wanted tops the PlayStation2 chart, GTA: Liberty City Stories is top for the PSP (No.12 in the all format chart), Shadow the Hedgehog tops the GameCube chart, Mario Kart DS is top for the DS and Pokemon Emerald tops the GBA chart.

There you have it. EA makes it three successive years with a Christmas No.1. Early favourites The Chronicles of Narnia and King Kong were not strong enough, despite their movie tie-in marketing. Aslan the Lion may be king of Narnia, and Kong may be the king of the Jungle, but EA and Need for Speed are certainly kings of the videogames chart.
