Rockstar Games’ LA Noire has debuted at the top of the All Formats All Prices UK video game chart, becoming the fastest-selling new video game IP ever in the UK.

Sales for the crime thriller are said to be on a par with the launch of Red Dead Redemption, although this time around the split between platforms is more even. With Red Dead the Xbox 360 took a massive 65 per cent of week one sales, while LA Noire sold 58 per cent on Xbox 360 and 42 per cent on PS3.

LA Noire is the 13th fastest-selling Xbox 360 game in the UK and the 11th fastest-selling on PS3.

LEGO Pirates holds at No.2, Brink slipped to No.3 (down 48 per cent), Zumba holds at No.4 and Namco Bandai’s The Witcher 2: Assassin’s of Kings is new at No.5 – the PC RPG outsold the launch week of the first title by 3 to 1.

Elsewhere Crysis 2 is bumped up the chart to No.6 thanks to retailer price promotions, Portal 2 is down to No.7, FIFA 11 stands strong at No.8, Mortal Kombat slides to No.9 and Black Ops clings on at No.10.

The launch of the new lower-price Wii bundles also saw Mario Kart zooming back into the Top 40 at No.23 – sales up 266 per cent week on week.

LA Noire making it to No.1 isn’t going to surprise anyone, but some will be taken aback by the strength of the week one sales – on a par with Red Dead Redemption. It was the hugely long tail which helped Red Dead on it way to over eight million sales, though, so it’s way too early to say Rockstar has a similar sized hit on its hands.

It’s worth taking a moment for Tecmo Koei’s Dead or Alive: Dimensions. The pretty decent 3DS fighting game charted at No.2 in the 3DS chart, but this wasn’t good enough to make the Top 40 in the big boys All Formats list.

Fable III on PC also failed to find a Top 40 place, charting at No.6 in the PC chart. As with The Witcher 2, we expect a large chunk of sales would have been made digitally – figures of which aren’t included by ChartTrack.

Codemasters’ DiRT 3 hits stores tomorrow, and we’re pretty confident the classy racer will make it to No.1 next week. The only game with a chance of keeping the off-road sequel from the top is LA Noire, but it’ll need a super strong week two for this to happen.
