Gears of War has not only shot to the top of the chart, but has also become the fastest selling Xbox 360 game, the second fastest Microsoft game behind Halo 2, and the third fastest selling game of the year. It looks like Gears of War is just what Microsoft and the Xbox 360 needed in the run-up to Christmas.
What’s also impressive is that the game is only available on a single platform, and still managed to outsell multiplatform giants Need for Speed Carbon (down to No.2) and WWE SmackDown! Vs Raw 2007 (down to No.3).
The battle of the Football games swings back in favour of FIFA 07, with EA’s ever present series climbing one place to No.4, whiles PES 6 drops two places to No.6. This week’s biggest climber comes from THQ’s Bratz: Forever Diamondz , up 28 places to No.9.
Besides Gears of War, the only other new releases to make the Top 40 are Tony Hawk’s Project 8 at a disappointing No.18 and Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus at No.28.
A flurry of new releases will be aiming for glory this week, but can any challenge at the top. Those with hopes include Bionicle Heroes, Cricket 07, Eragon, Guitar Hero II, Justice League Heroes, Medal of Honor: Heroes and Phantasy Star Universe. It’s likely, though, that the biggest challenge to the top spots will come from Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Sonic the Hedgehog and Superman Returns.
