It hasn’t been a good week for English sport, with England on the verge of failing to quality for Euro 2008, England losing to South Africa in the Rugby World Cup final and Hamilton missing out on the F1 Drivers Championship by a solitary point.

It’s good news for UK-based Sports Interactive though, with its latest Football Manager title shooting to the top of the All Formats Video Game Chart, replacing EA’s FIFA 08.

Football Manager 2008 is SEGA’s first No.1 since Football Manager 2007 hit the top spot in the same week last year. Sales of the latest iteration are slightly down on previous editions, although only by 2,000 units on FM 2006 and 1,000 units on FM 2007.

EA’s The Orange Box on PC and Xbox 360 enters at No.3: the Xbox 360 version accounts for 77% of sales and outsells Halo 3 and PGR4, while the PC edition equals sales of Half-Life 2: Episode One.

Nintendo’s DS adventure, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is the third highest new entry at No.4 in the All Formats and at No.2 based on individual format sales.

Other new entries include Take 2’s Carnival for Wii at No.25 and Rockstar Games’ Table Tennis at No.36 – although technically a re-entry.
