Chart Track reports that EA’s FIFA 09 has entered the All Formats All Prices video game chart at No.1, setting a new record for the series in the process. The game has been flying off store shelves and has earned the biggest ever launch of a FIFA game, with sales up by 37.5 per cent over the 08 edition.
The game debuted at No.1 on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and PSP charts, with 42 per cent of total sales on the Xbox 360 – the third fastest selling game on the console behind GTA 4 and Halo 3. The PS3 version took a 40 per cent share of sales and became the second fastest selling game on the console, only bettered by GTA 4. The PS2 version accounted for 11 per cent of sales, PSP 3 per cent and the rest was spread across Wii and DS.
LucasArts’ Star Wars: The Force Unleashed falls to No.2, sales down 40 per cent, while Ubisoft’s Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway climbs one place to No.3. Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii each slide two places to No.3 and No.4 respectively.
While no new releases outside of FIFA 09 could break into the Top 40, several titles did see strong second week sales: SEGA’s Samba de Amigo breaks into the Top 20 at No.18, while Sonic Chronicles is also a new entry at No.31. Retailer promotions on Super Mario Galaxy saw it re-enter the chart at No.21, while Wall-E is up to No.13.
Of this week’s big releases it’s Warner’s Lego Batman which seems most able to challenge at the top. Its multi-format release and broad appeal suggest a strong debut. LucasArts’ Fracture also releases on Friday, but it’s not yet clear how strongly poor review scores will affect the game’s sales.
