An announcement on a firm UK release date for the DS remake of classic JRPG Chrono Trigger will be made “fairly soon”, Square Enix has confirmed.

The game, which was released in the US this week, is officially scheduled for a PAL release in “early 2009”.

When contacted by VideoGamer.com today for an update, a Square Enix representative said the game was “still pencilled down for early 2009” with a TBC release date.

The representative added: “But we will make an announcement fairly soon though.”

We can’t wait. Chrono Trigger, originally released by Square for the SNES in the mid-90s and later on the PlayStation, has never been released in the UK.

It’s considered by many fans to be the greatest Japanese role-playing game of all time, and was developed by Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy creator) and Yuuji Horii (Dragon Quest creator), among other JRPG heavyweights.

The upcoming DS version is a remake of the original, but with all-new dual screen presentation, Touch-Screen functionality, a brand new dungeon and a DS Wireless Play mode.

We’ll have more on Chrono Trigger as soon as we get it.
