Ubisoft head honcho Yves Guillemot has revealed in a new interview that he believes the next hardware cycle is likely to be the last of its kind.
Speaking to Variety, Guillemot said that while he reckons there will be new consoles at some point, he feels the industry will transition to a platform-agnostic world where streaming will take centre stage.
'There will be one more console generation and then after that, we will be streaming, all of us,' said the executive.
Quite when the next hardware generation will rock up is anyone's guess, although recent chatter suggests that the PS5 (and presumably, the Xbox Two or whatever Microsoft calls it) won't be out until 2020 at the earliest.
'I think we will see another generation, but there is a good chance that step-by-step we will see less and less hardware,' offered Guillemot.
The PS4 and Xbox One both turn five-years-old this November, which back in the old days would usually signal a fresh batch of hardware. However, the previous cycle turned things on its head, with 360 running for eight years before a successor arrived and PS3 hanging on for seven years.
Nintendo on the other hand seems to do its own thing. The Wii U came on the scene six years after its predecessor, although Ninty was quick to follow it five years later with the Switch (Wii U didn't do so hot, if you recall).
