Ubisoft has announced its bringing its Ubisoft Plus subscription service to Xbox consoles from today, offering a number of Ubisoft titles and their expansions for a monthly fee.
The move means the service, previously exclusive to PC, has now expanded to consoles for the first time, and with the new ‘Multi Access’ tier will allow subscribers to access Ubisoft Plus across both formats – even allowing them, in some cases, to resume the same session and continue playing right where they left off, regardless of if they were last playing at their desk or on their couch.
While the standard subscription clocks in at £12.99 (or $14.99) a month, it’ll cost an extra £2 (or $2) per month to add the Multi Access tier to your subscription – but Ubisoft also note that for your extra money, you’ll also get access to most additional downloadable content and expansions to games in its catalogue too.
It’s an interesting proposition – especially on the console that is also home to Game Pass and EA Play (with the latter also included in an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription) – and speaking to GamesIndustry.biz director Philippe Tremblay explained some of the reasoning behind the decision.
“We haven’t necessarily seen that this market has reached the maximum opportunity here. It’s still fairly new across the board that we have subscription offers, even from Xbox or other partners out there. I think the key point – as we see in many other industries – is the content being at the centre of what the consumer wants.”
Tremblay says that Ubisoft wants to “Reach a new population of gamers and people that may not have a chance to play our games yet,” with the move. “We definitely see subscription as a way to do that. The expansion of the platform going to Xbox today is one more way of making our games accessible.”
The library of games in the Ubisoft Plus library stands at over a hundred at launch, with more surely to come over the coming months. There’s also a number of non-Ubisoft games on the service, which Tremblay says they intend to add to in the near future – “This is something that we want to pursue.”
