In a surprise move, Ubisoft has announced that they are entering the sports genre, with a Vijay Singh licensed golf title being the first announced game. Singh is currently the No.1 ranked golfer in the world, and Ubisoft’s exclusive license with him should give the game some appeal. It will certainly need it, with EA currently dominating the sport with their Tiger Woods branded titles.

Singh was excited about the game’s prospects. He said: “Ubisoft is doing an incredible job in bringing my style of golf to the world of gaming. I am excited to be teaming up with one of the most innovative and experienced gaming companies in the industry and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

Ubisoft also announced that they have acquired the technology, tools and source code for Microsoft’s team sports games. This includes NHL Rivals, NFL Fever, NBA Inside Drive and MLB Inside Pitch. The company plans to develop sports games for all platforms, but will initially concentrate on current and next-generation consoles.

“There is still room for innovation in the sports genre and Ubisoft has some great ideas that we’re looking forward to implementing,” said Yves Guillemot, president and chief executive officer of Ubisoft. “We hope to not only offer sports fans games that have a unique flair and character, but also something that will take advantage of the fabulous capacities of current and next generation consoles.”
