Long before the brain training video game phenomenon there was chess, a board game which is likely to tax your mind far greater than any collection of mildly challenging mini-games.

Ubisoft has announced that it is to release Chessmaster: The Art of Learning for Nintendo DS and Chessmaster: Grandmaster Edition for PC, both of which will feature the teachings of International Master and eight-time National Chess Champion Josh Waitzkin.

Through a series of exciting courses and tutorials taken directly from Waitzkin’s groundbreaking book, The Art of Learning, players will progress from a chess novice to a possible new champion.

On the DS players will be able to battle against friends wirelessly, with a variety of game types available. These will include Dark Chess, Extinction chess and Losing Chess. PC players will be able to play over a LAN or the internet.

Mini-games will also be included, each featuring 20 levels of gameplay and a high-score table. Players will have access to six games in total, including Minefield, in which chess pieces are used to locate mines; Breaking the Lines, where the knight is moved to capture all of the pawns; and Fork My Fruit, a game that uses chess pieces to fork fruit of the same kind.

Hardened fans will take pleasure from having access to 900 of the most important chess games of all time, offering valuable learning experiences for players whishing to improve their game.

Chessmaster: The Art of Learning and Grandmaster Edition are scheduled for release worldwide in October 2007.
