According to Ubisoft Montreal chief executive Yannis Mallat, “3D is to pictures what Dolby Stereo was to sound” and believes that once consumers experience gaming in 3D they won’t want to go back to traditional two-dimensional experiences.

Ubisoft will be first out the door with a big budget, high profile game release in 3D, with James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game. Like the movie on which the game is based, the Ubisoft developed game will be best experienced in 3D, but also playable in 2D.

A 3D capable television or monitor, plus a pair of polarising glasses are required to experience 3D.

Avatar is scheduled for release on Friday, with the movie to open a few weeks later on December 17.
