Nintendo does not anticipate there being supply issues for Switch when it launches worldwide on March 3, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has told Wired.

“What we’ve said publicly is that there will be 2 million units that will be shipped worldwide for the launch, essentially through month one,” explained Fils-Aime.

He added: “Two million for essentially the first month is a huge number, especially when you look and see that this is not peak seasonality. This is essentially the first three weeks of March. Our focus is making sure that the consumer who wants to buy a Nintendo Switch can buy a Nintendo Switch. That’s how we build our supply chain, that’s how we think through the amount of product that’s available.”

So, it could be that day one stock may sell out, but there is plenty of stock coming to retail channels over the following few weeks. What’s not clear is how fast stock will be replenished in the months following launch.

However, the situation should not be a repeat of the sold-out NES Mini.

“What happened with NES Classic is that was a situation where the global demand was well in excess of anything we had anticipated, and that’s what created shortages,” explained Fils-Aime.

Nintendo Switch is now sold out at Amazon, though GAME continues to take pre-orders with the caveat of being unable to “guarantee that every order will be fulfilled for launch”.
