Trion Worlds, developer behind MMO Rift, has announced a new game platform to publish third-party titles.

Red Door is both a consumer platform and “full-scale publishing and development platform” that will allow consumers to find and download new content.

Additionally, the new platform will give developers and publishers the opportunity to build and run games with real-time updates. This will “radically speed up the time-to-market” for games using Red Door.

“Our goal is to revolutionise premium games and help the industry realise its potential in the connected era,” said Trion Worlds CEO Dr. Lars Buttler.

“Our first title Rift is just the tip of the iceberg; with Red Door we intend to catalyze significant change for the industry and unleash new creative possibilities.”

Red Door is said to function like a service akin to Xbox LIVE. The platform is launching early next year, and Trion is currently working with publishers to develop games that are “living worlds” for the platform.

This is an impressively ambitious project for Trion Worlds to take on. Ambitious to the point of sounding slightly absurd, but it’s worth remembering that these are the guys who have managed to shake up the MMO industry in a way that no Western MMO since WoW has managed, so they certainly have ability behind the ambition.
