Skylanders creators Toys for Bob are back leading development on this year’s title, Activision has announced.

The studio took a year away from the franchise last year, having developed the first two Skylanders titles Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and Skylanders: Giants.

Last year’s game, Skylanders: Swap Force, was developed by Vicarious Visions.

The news suggests that Skylanders’ development cycle may have been expanded to two years, similar to Call of Duty’s three year development expansion.

As well as teasing the first details on this year’s game, Activision revealed that total sales for the Skylanders franchise had generated approximately $2bn with over 175m toys sold.

“Skylanders reached these milestones faster than any property from independent publisher in video game history,” explained Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.

The new game is expected to launch this winter and feature “another creative breakthrough and new play pattern”.
