Many Tomb Raider fans were hoping for a remaster of the LAU trilogy in similar vein to 1-3 and 4-6, but it’s looking likely the best we are getting is PS Plus PS2 ports as the remaster development team “haven’t received a request” from Crystal Dynamics. During September’s State of Play, Sony confirmed The Last of Us Part 2 as a bonus PS Plus game this month before the arrival of Alan Wake 2, Cocoon, and Goat Simulator 3 in October. Sony also confirmed the leaks about Tomb Raider Anniversary joining PS Plus Premium “later this year”. While it will be good to return to Crystal Dynamics’ remake of Lara Croft’s first ever PS1 spectacle, the unfortunate news is that it’s likely coming in the place of any remaster.

Tomb Raider Remasered devs “haven’t received request” to remaster LAU trilogy

Tomb Raider YouTuber, Seth Mackenzie, recently published a video discussing whether Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld should receive remasters. In the replies to this video, Timur Gagiev, also known as XProger, commented, “The remasters team is full of ideas and ready to jump on LAU already, but we haven’t even received a request, unfortunately”.

XProger is a Tomb Raider fan and the mastermind behind the OpenLara open-source engine emulating the original PS1 games on PC. Back in 2024, they revealed on X that they were recruited by Saber Interactive to “lead the project [Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered]” as part of a “small development team”.

Unfortunately, judging by their comment, XProger and his development team will not be involved with an LAU remaster. This is disappointing news as both 1-3 and 4-6 were excellent packages, especially the latter following extensive post-launch support.

It’s possible an LAU trilogy remaster could still happen via another team under the supervision of Crystal Dynamics, but for the time being all we know we are getting is PS2 ports via PS Plus. We already received Tomb Raider Legend earlier this year, and it’s likely Anniversary will join in October to celebrate the Tomb Raider series turning 29-years old. Underworld is the only game not announced for PS Plus so far, but it could possibly happen in February as Valentine’s Day is Lara’s canonical birth date.

While getting Tomb Raider Legend and Anniversary accessible through PS Plus is good news, it’s also bittersweet as it’s the inferior PS2 versions. The PS3 versions of the LAU games are vastly superior, but it’s the PS2 ports we’re being treated to instead. This is a huge shame, especially if we don’t get a remaster of the LAU chapter.

Aside from the probability of Tomb Raider Anniversary joining PS Plus Premium next month, Sony has already confirmed Alan Wake 2, Cocoon, and Goat Simulator 3 for Essential on October 7th. Alan Wake 2 is perfect for Halloween, so PS Plus subscribers should plan to play it on All Hallow’s Eve.

As for the future of Tomb Raider, the series’ official Instagram account has teased “we got more coming,” and Sophie Turner has promised Lara Croft is in “very safe hands” after being cast as the British icon for Amazon Prime.
