Firstly, when executive vice president of sales and marketing, Reggie Fils-Aime, told the audience that 27 games would be playable, I think that was a little misleading. Yes, there is a good number of playable Wii games on the show floor, but some are merely tech demos of what might eventually become a game. I’m talking about the shooting, table tennis and Obstacle demos. Also, of the 27 games, Wii Sports, a collection of sports games, is counted four times.
Of the playable games, Super Mario Galaxy is winning most praise, with Zelda also doing pretty well for itself. Metroid Prime 3 has come under a bit of criticism for less than spectacular graphics coupled with a slow turning speed, and while Excite Truck is proving to be fun, many are just asking why Excite Bike for Wii wasn’t made instead. One of the Wii’s most talked about titles pre-E3 was Ubisoft’s Red Steel, but it hasn’t really lived up to the hype it took with it into the show.
A release date for the Wii and a launch line-up are to still to be revealed, but you can expect some of the games on the list above to be released on day one.
