The Umbrella Academy, an adaptation of the hugely successful comic series of the same name from writer, Gerard Way (The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys, Doom Patrol (2016), Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye), and artist Gabriel Bá (Casanova, BPRD: 1947, Daytripper), published by Dark Horse Comics (Hellboy, The Mask, Sin City), has been a huge hit for Netflix ever since its debut in 2019.

Created by Steve Blackman, the show has already aired 3 seasons of 10 episodes each, following the estranged Hargreeves siblings as they learn to reconcile with one another, accepting each others differences and journeys, all while trying to prevent the world from ending each season.

As Season 3 only released in June 2022, please be aware that everything in this article past this point will be considered spoilers for Seasons 1 to 3 as I’ll be discussing the latest news for Season 4 of the show as well as discussing the possible story of Season 4 in light of the Season 3 finale.

As seen in the tweet above, Netflix have just announced that the next season of The Umbrella Academy, it’s fourth, will also be its final season.

Unfortunately Netflix have not announced any further details yet beyond this announcement but its highly likely that there will be several more announcements coming in the next month or two regarding the show.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Release Date?

At the moment, Netflix have not yet announced the release date for Season 4, only that there will be a Season 4 and that it will be the final season of the show.

However, given production schedules, especially in light of Covid safety measures on set for productions at the moment. I’d say it’s most likely that the show will release in 2024, likely around June or July of 2024, so that it would only be a wait of 2 years from the end of Season 3.

The Umbrella Academy Season 4 Story

25/08/2022

As we haven’t had any official confirmation yet of what Season 4 of The Umbrella Academy’s story will be, I am going to make some educated guesses based on Seasons 1 to 3 and the finale of Season 3 especially. So, lets begin with a recap of the major points of the Season 3 finale.

The Oblivion Hotel which was the setting for most of Season 3 was revealed to be built by Sir Reginald as both a protective front surrounding a portal to another dimension and a machine to tap into the portal’s power allowing whoever uses it to rewrite reality and create a new reality of their own design.

It becomes clear then that the reason Sir Reginald adopted seven children in both The Umbrella Academy and The Sparrow Academy realities is that, should he have the need, he could drain the children of the cosmic energy that gave them their abilities using the machine which in turn would then allow him to create a brand new reality.

In the finale, seven of the 8 remaining Umbrella and Sparrow Academy members (Viktor, 5, Sloane, Ben, Lila, Diego, and Klaus) all stand on the sigils to activate the machine as Sir Reginald stops Alison from standing on them as he knows it will drain their energy and he has already made a deal with Alison to rewrite reality to bring back her daughter, Claire.

Then, because the machine is killing them, Alison betrays Sir Reginald by killing him. Although, instead of shutting down the machine, she finishes what Sir Reginald had begun, and as a result we’re shown that the machine worked as Lila, Diego, Viktor, Klaus, Ben, and Five are all returned to Obsidian Memorial Park.

We then see that Luther (who’d been murdered by Sir Reginald as part of his manipulation of events to get everyone to the machine) is returned to life too, much to the joy of his siblings. However, this joy is short lived as Luther, in a panic, asks about Sloane as she is not in Obsidian Memorial Park and none of the others know where she is or what may have happened to her. To then further their confusion and fear, they all discover that they are now powerless, likely due to the machine taking the powers of those who were there and then using them to rewrite reality so that the others who weren’t there like Luther never receive theirs.

At the same time as this is happening, we see Alison arrive in a yellow cab to her home wherein she finds Claire safe and well in her bed, before being greeted by her husband from the 1960’s, Raymond, who not only recognises her but seemingly has kept his memories as well in addition to being the same age as when Alison last saw him in 1963. It’s then revealed that not only is he Alison’s husband but he is Claire’s father as well.

We then see everyone in Obsidian Memorial Park split and go their separate ways despite Five’s protestations against it before the camera swoops above the treeline and we see the city skyline is now dominated by several buildings with the Hargreeves name emblazoned on them. Before moving to the tallest building in the skyline revealing an alive once more Sir Reginald Hargreeves looking out over the city as he is joined by his wife, Abigail, who we last saw dying in her bed in a flashback in Season 1 Episode 10 as she implored her husband that their world needed him.

These reveals strongly indicate that not only was Hargreeves plan to rewrite reality successful but that it had always been his plan to have this rewrite cure his wife and possibly pave the way for him to rule the city, and possibly the world. While it would also appear that the deal Alison struck in secret with Hargreeves was that if she helped him to enact his plan, he would ensure that in the new reality that she would have a life with both Claire and Raymond.

Going forward into Season 4, I’d expect that we will see Diego and Lila either leading or trying to lead a normal life at last. While Luther, with Klaus helping him, will still be searching for any clues as to what happened to Sloane and whether or not she is alive in this universe, especially as we know that there are now two versions of Ben in this reality, the Ben from the Sparrow reality who crossed over, and seemingly a Ben born into this reality who appears to be living an ordinary life.

As for Five, I fully expect to see him gathering or having gathered as much information as he possibly can to track all the events that lead to the modern day of this reality that he finds himself in. As well as trying to find a way to reset it again or possibly get out of it into another reality. It’s also possible that it will be Five who seeks out this reality’s Pogo if he is not already in service to Hargreeves.

With Viktor, I would be surprised if we don’t see him at least try to search for Sissy and Harlan in this reality giving the love and bond that he has with both of them. While, I imagine we will, at least initially, see Alison finally living the life she has so desperately sought with Raymond and Claire, before something, most likely her siblings seeking her out, puts her new life in jeopardy of falling apart.

Finally, as we know Hargreeves is of an alien race, could the threat this season be that he and Abigail have been prepping Earth as a new home for their race, or, could it be that their already on Earth in this reality. The possibilities are quite enticing for where this final season could go in terms of how weird and wild it could potentially go with its plots.

Of course, as soon as any official plot details are revealed they will be updated here.
