According to data released by ELSPA/GfK Chart-Track, Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ended 2009 as the year’s best-selling video game.

The record-breaking FPS fought off a strong challenge by Nintendo, with the platform holder claiming four of the top ten places in the chart.

“The phenomenal success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was undoubtedly one of the leading entertainment stories of year and firmly established video games as one of the leading forms of entertainment in the UK,” said Michael Rawlinson, Director General, ELSPA.

“There is no doubt that 2009 belonged to Activision, but it was a strong year for many software developers and publishers. The rise of family-orientated, multiplayer games in 2009 also demonstrates how video games have expanded into new genres finding fresh audiences. If nothing else, last year confirmed that we are now a nation of enthusiastic and energetic gamers here in Britain.”
