Paramount’s planned trilogy of new Terminator films, which began with Terminator Genisys last summer, looks dead in the water after the second film was pulled from its May 19, 2017 release date with no new date given.

Not only has Terminator 2 been dropped from Paramount’s release schedule, but its May 19 date has been taken by Baywatch, starring Dwayne Johnson.

Genisys made only $89 million at the US box office, saved somewhat by oversees markets which helped the movie reach $440,603,537 internationally. Take into account the production budget of over $150 million, plus all the marketing and you’re not leaving much change.

Back in October Skydance – which co-financed Genisys – said it was re-adjusting plans for a trilogy after the disappointing ticket sales for the first film. The third Terminator movie was pencilled in for June 29, 2018.

In 2019 – 35 years after the original film – the rights to The Terminator will revert back to creator James Cameron.
