The new Legend of Zelda game for Wii U will release in 2016, Nintendo has confirmed.

The game had previously been scheduled to launch this year, but was delayed back in March to offer the team more time to “create something that exceeds… expectations”.

Nintendo chose not to announce a new release window for the game, however, leading to speculation that the game could arrive even later than 2016, or that development may have transferred to Nintendo’s upcoming NX platform.

But that isn’t the case, Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata revealed during last night’s Nintendo Direct.

“2016 marks the 30th anniversary of Zelda,” he said. “We hope you will enjoy The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and the brand new Zelda game headed to Wii U.”

A more precise release window has yet to be announced, nor is it known whether Nintendo has plans to cross-develop the game for both Wii U and NX

The first official details on the NX are due to be announced next year.
