June software sales in the US were dominated by Sony’s The Last of Us, which charted at No.1 ahead of Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Leaf, NPD figures have revealed.

NPD analyst Liam Callahan told GamesIndustry that The Last of Us is Sony’s second-biggest first month for a PS3 title, behind the 1.1 million selling God of War 3. We also know that Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 3 sold 700,000 copies on its first month, placing sales for The Last of Us somewhere between the two.

The Last of Us sold 3.4 million copies worldwide as of July 3.

Nintendo says that Animal Crossing sold 505,000 copies in June, with over 20 per cent sold via the eShop.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition was the No.3 selling game in the US for June, followed by Black Ops 2 and NBA 2K13.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D charted at No.7, with 108,000 sold across retail and digital, while Activision’s Deadpool is new at No.8.

Lifetime sales of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon now stand at over 750,000 copies at retail and digital combined.
