Global sales of The Last of Us have exceeded 3.4 million units as of July 3, Sony Computer Entertainment has announced.

The sales figure was reached in less than three weeks following the game’s launch on June 14.

Sony says the game’s performance has surpassed all sales expectations to become the fastest-selling PS3 title of 2013, and is now the fastest-selling new software title in the history of the PS3.

“These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us,” said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios.

“The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example.”

Sony says the 3.4 million is made up of the retail sell-in number (not actual copies in consumer hands) and digital sales.

Naughty Dog’s previous game, Uncharted 3, sold 3.8 million copies on day one, but was the third instalment in an established PlayStation franchise.
