Following on from the successful launches of Nintendo’s unique handheld console in the US and Japan, you can now add the UK to that list, and tell anybody who is interested that it has also become the fastest-selling console in the UK, ever. Yes, even faster than the PS2, GameCube and Xbox (although admittedly the DS is a hell of a lot cheaper).

David Yanton, Nintendo UK General Manager, was understandably excited. He said the launch was an “unprecedented success”.

“Gamers new and old have embraced the Nintendo DS and have left no doubt that it is the new must have handheld console,” he said. “Nintendo set out to create a new way of hand-held gaming, offering an innovative and enjoyable experience and with the new Nintendo DS, and we have certainly accomplished this.”

With worldwide sales now around 5 million, it is fair to say that the big N are happy with the performance of the device, and the UK sales must be pleasing for the Company, given that Nintendo has traditionally struggled over here (nothing at all to do with being treated like 2nd class citizens, huh, Nintendo?). Top games are Mario 64 DS and WarioWare! Touched, mainly because there isn’t much else out as yet. And therein will lie the real test for Nintendo; with a pretty sparse release-schedule over the next few months, it will be interesting to see if gamers still buy the device in their droves during the rest of the Spring and Summer. Only time shall tell, of course, so for now let us raise a glass and celebrate Nintendo’s success. Hurrah!
