It seems EA can’t catch a break with Star Wars Battlefront 2 of late, with the latest news being that the Belgian Gaming Commission is to investigate whether the practice of lootboxes constitutes gambling, with Blizzard’s Overwatch also being named under watch.

As reported on by Belgian outlet VTM News and translated by Kotaku, the General Director of the commission Peter Naessens says that the practice of buying the boxes may constitute EA and Blizzard as operating a gambling business, which is illegal in the country of Belgium without a permit and could result in fines of ‘hundreds and thousands of Euros’ in addition to other and subsequent games potentially having to take action.

Similar investigations by the UK government and both regulatory video game bodies PEGI and the ESRB classified the practice as ‘not gambling’ but it remains to be seen what the BGC’s verdict will be. Regardless,  it’s no doubt further bad PR for EA on top of the ongoing battle with fans that currently plagues the launch of Star Wars Battlefront II at midnight tonight.
