Macworld are reporting that TDK Interactive has developed a 100GB Blu-ray disc. This is about twice that which was previously possible. Not only has TDK increased the storage capacity but they have also doubled the recording speed to 72Mbit/s.

The new Blu-ray discs are made from 4 layers, each holding 25GB. Only a few days ago, Blue-ray’s rival format, the HD-DVD from Toshiba managed 45GB.

Last week there was talk of a compromise bringing the rival formats together but this now seems less likely to happen. Blu-ray is Sony’s format and is the format on which Playstation 3 games will be released, so our dreams of a unified format appear to be over.
