New information on how the Telltale and Gearbox collaboration Tales from the Borderlands will play out have been revealed in a new panel during SXSW over the weekend.

Polygon reports that the game is set on Pandora, the planet familiar to fans of the first two Borderlands titles, but sets its sights on two lesser known characters from the world: Fiona, a smartly attired con artist, and Rhys, a cyberneticaly enhanced Hyperion company man.

Each character will tell their version of the plot of the game, but each is spun to their individual benefit.

“You never really play what actually happened, you’re playing this Big Fish version of what happened,” Telltale’s Kevin Bruner explained during the panel.

Telltale’s Harrison Pink likened the choices players will face to The Walking Dead, but instead of picking the lesser of two evils, must choose the better of two desirable options.

Humour has been a key element of Borderlands, and Telltale is keen to point out that it’s a studio with a long comedic history with Sam & Max.

“We’ve got all this pent up comedy in boxes around the studio that we’ve been wanting to unpack,” Bruner said.

Borderlands fans will also be pleased to hear that action elements will be present, but “in a Telltale kind of way,” says Pink.

“It’s a Borderlands game, there has to be crazy stuff going on,” Bruner explained. “I’m glad that people recognize it in [The Wolf Among Us], because figuring out how to do action and storytelling at the same time has been tricky to do without reverting to a traditional, run-around video game. We want to keep things cinematic, and have action sequences tell stories. We got better between Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us, and I think we’ll get better as we move into Borderlands, because you have to have crazy, over-the-top action scenes, or it’s not a Borderlands game.”

Tales from the Borderlands will be released later this year.
