4X strategy game Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 was not off to a great start following its release at the start of 2025. At the time of writing, the latest entry in the series has lower PC player counts than both Civilization 5 and Civilization 6, but publisher Take-Two isn’t giving up hope.

On release, the latest entry in the series was lambasted for its heavily simplified user-interface and huge gameplay changes, some of which have been heavily altered over the past five months. While the game was off to a rough start, Take-Two believes the strategy game will still have long legs as it continues to improve.

Take-Two has faith in Civilization 7

Speaking to IGN following the publisher’s latest financial report, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted that the latest Civ title is “definitely improving” following recent updates, but explained that the strategy series has always had a “long tail”.

“I think the key thing is that Civ has always been a slow burn,” the CEO told the outlet. “It’s always been a title that had — I’m not really a big believer in the long tail theory of the entertainment business — but Civ is an example of that theory. And right now our projections for the lifetime value of the title are very consistent with our initial expectations for the title.”

Despite the issues the game has suffered since launch, Zelnick explained that “consumer uptake is better and better” for the title. As with Civ 6, the hope is that the latest game in the series will continue to sell as time goes on and DLC releases for the strategy game.

“We feel really good about the title,” Zelnick continued. “I think over time it’s going to take its place in its civilization pantheon in a very successful, credible way.”

Developer Firaxis has worked to address some of the core issues with the game with the upcoming 1.2.3 update bringing Age Transition improvements aiming to address the main structure of the game’s campaign. While the game still has its controversial main structure, players will now be able to customise how it works.
