With the Kickstarter for Nightdive Studios’ System Shock remaster now looking pretty likely – $775K of its $900K target has already been secured – the team has released some updated concepts for the game’s UI and HUD.
Sadly these designs won’t be patched into the pre-alpha demo – set to be updated as early as today – but they do provide backers with an idea of the work going on at the studio.
“There are many challenges in redesigning the interface and HUD of System Shock (1994),” explains Corey from the Nightdive Studios U.I. // U.X. team. “There are a few antiquated features that have to be either removed or completely replaced. One example is the toggle-able ability to see behind your head with a cybernetic implant. The original game built this in as an ‘implant’ or ‘ability’ because the turn radius was quite low, making the player vulnerable from mysterious attacks from behind. This is just one of many things we are looking into outside a fresh modern look.”
You’ll find additional images of the designs on the Kickstarter page, where you can also pledge to support the project – $30 or more gets you a digital copy of the game on your platform of choice (currently only announced for PC and Xbox One, though PS4 seems likely).
