Nintendo has revealed in an FAQ for Switch's newly-launched online service that any cloud game saves you have will be deleted should you stop paying for your membership.

'Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership.' However, it does add that if you store your data 'locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership.'

Nintendo Switch Online launches today in the US and arrives in the UK tomorrow. You'll need to fork out for a membership if you want to game online, although not every title will require a subscription – Fortnite being one notable example.

It's also worth noting that not every Switch game will support cloud saves, such as Splatoon 2 and the upcoming Pokemon Let's Go! titles.

Ninty is also offering 20 classic NES games for launch as part of Switch Online's subscription, which can be played using a new wireless range of NES controllers. Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has described Switch Online as the 'true successor' to the Virtual Console.
