The Nintendo Switch will ship with a basic Joy-Con grip, designed to enable the left and right Joy-Cons to be joined together to form a more classic, larger controller.

However, this bundled grip does not offer the ability to charge the Joy-Cons whilst you are playing. For this functionality you’ll need to purchase the Joy-Con Charging Grip for around £27.99.

“Combine the left and right Joy-Con into one larger controller with this handy grip. It also lets you keep playing while you’re charging your Joy-Con, so you don’t have to miss a minute,” explains the blurb of the Charging Grip.

The Charging Grip is also translucent, vs the opaque finish of the bundled grip.

Without the Charging Grip you’ll need to attach the Joy-Cons to the Switch system to charge. Once charged the controllers are said to last about 20 hours, so simply docking them overnight should avoid any annoying low battery situations.
